For the love of music in Rio

One of my favorite moments while in Rio was booking an Airbnb experience that consisted of a photography and cultural tour of various sights of Rio. I love Airbnb experiences because they allow you to experience the city with locals.

I was fortunate to meet Ita, my photographer, for this particular experience. Ita expressed that because he doesn’t get to practice his English much, he may sound rusty. However, his English was perfect for me.

While we walked through the streets of Rio on our way to the Royal Portuguese Reading Office, we started talking about our favorite types of music. We then realized that we both shared a love for Kendrick Lamar. We discussed Kendrick’s latest album, Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers. Ita told me, “It's amazing that you can relate to what an artist is saying even if you don’t speak the same language.” I expressed how this is one of my favorite albums because I enjoy storytelling rap music and how Kendrick expressed his vulnerability and pain on this album. The last thing I remember Ita saying was, “He (Kendrick) taught me that I should not feel guilty about being a victim when I was younger.” Then we both started crying as we continued our walk.

Music is so healing. The moment between Ita and me reminded me of Bob Marley’s song Trenchtown Rock, “When music hits, you feel no pain.”

Two people from different worlds bonding over music in a language that only one of us speaks fluently made my heart feel overjoyed with love that day. THIS is my favorite part about traveling: the connection I make with others worldwide.

XO,

Kemi
